Left the launch at Edgewater about 6:45 on a cloudy rainy eclipse day morning. My buddy Kyle and I headed out to look for early spring walleye. Water temp was 43.2. We went out to 32’ of water and started our troll west at 1.5 MPH. The plan was to follow the 32-36 foot contour line trolling crankbaits. Was not marking a lot of fish but those I saw were suspended at 18-22’feet. I had 5 lures covering depth from 10-17’ and one down at 25’. After about 45 min we caught our first fish. A nice keeper 20&1/2” and 3lb 4oz male. Hit a bandit at 15’. 35 min later we got another one on the line. Kyle thought it was a sheephead but it was just a Toad of an eye 26” and 7lb 9oz female. Hit another purple bandit at 15’ not the same lure as the first fish. She had 1.5lbs of eggs in her. 40 min later Kyle mentions the outside planner flag just isn’t quite straight up and had been that way for a while. So we decided to bring it in and check it out. As soon as the planner was off the line the fish was on!! This guy must have been resting up as we towed him around for who knows how long?! After a pretty good battle he was in the boat 27&1/4” 6lb 8oz male. Caught on a pink lemonade Perfect 10 While landing the last fish I accidentally bumped the anchor button on my trolling motor remote. So we ended up with a small mess of lines to clean up. We finished that and decided to motor back towards the launch and fish more once we got closer. The wind had picked up to 20 mph out of the south west. The ride back was directly south west. We were both soaked after the first 5 min so I made the call just to head back in. Off the water by 10:00. Got home the sun came out and we had a beautiful day!! Enjoyed the Eclipse with my wife and kids!! It was super cool we had almost 4 min of Totality.
Fish yielded 6lbs 4oz of fillets and I really like my new electric filet knife! Whitey showed me the way last year at NE Meet & Greet. I had to get one after I saw how much easier they made it!!
*****Additional Info for locals: I stopped by the ramps today on my way home as I do a few times a week. Spoke with a guy that said he found them in 12ft of water. In the same area I fished. He was jigging and didn’t catch any despite loosing a dozen worms to short strikes. Not sure if he was using stingers or not.
