Giant 72-Pound Clarks Hill Blue Cat Shatters 45-Year Record
When 16-year-old Walker Crowe isn’t riding bulls, he’s fishing.
Mike Bolton | May 14, 2024

Walker Crowe caught a Clarks Hill lake record 72-lb., 3-oz. blue cat that broke the lake record of 62 pounds caught by Ralph Barbee in 1979.

You would have to consider it quite unusual if a 45-year-old lake fishing record was shattered by someone fishing from the bank in a community fishing hole that everyone knows about.

Well, Walker Crowe is a quite unusual 16-year-old.

While others his age are playing video games and worrying about teenage anxieties, Walker is dominating catfish tournaments and riding bulls. And maybe most unusual for any teenager, he has patience.

The Hartwell resident caught a Clarks Hill lake record 72-lb., 3-oz. blue cat that broke the lake record of 62 pounds caught by Ralph Barbee in 1979. It also surpassed Walker’s personal best by almost 30 pounds.

“I started fishing with my Paw Paw (grandfather) when I was 2 or 3,” the home-schooled youngster said. “There has never been a time since I haven’t loved it. Clarks Hill is about 45 minutes away from my house, but I try to go fishing there at least once a week. I’ve been fishing there my whole life.”

On Tuesday, May 7, Walker went to the lake for a little afternoon fishing. It turned out to be a trip like no other.

“I got off work and I went to the river without my boat,” he said. “I went to a community fishing hole that everyone knows about. It’s a long stretch of shallow water with this one deep hole in it. It’s really good when the lake gets muddy, and it was muddy that day.

“It’s a place that has been really good to me through the years.

“I took four rods and some bream for bait. I cast the bream into the deep hole and waited.”

Walker said you must be patient to fish there, but catfish will eventually leave the shallow water to check out the deep hole.

“I was there about 45 minutes,” he said. “At first, I noticed my rod tip twitching a little bit, then the rod bent double. I grabbed the rod and set the hook, and the fish about dragged me in. I knew I better loosen the drag. The fish started dragging out line and almost spooled me. I fought him for about 20 minutes, and I finally got him to the bank. I saw that he was barely hooked. I jammed my hand down his throat and got the other hand under his belly and got him in.”

Walker was using Mad Katz 30-lb. test line. The big catfish was taken to Ace Hardware in Royston to be weighed on certified scales.

Walker said the one happiest about the record fish was probably his Paw Paw who taught him to fish.

“He was smiling from ear-to-ear,” Walker said. “He was so happy for me.”

Walker won seven catfish tournaments from his boat last year. He said fishing is his favorite hobby with riding bulls in rodeos a close second.

“Riding bulls and fishing is about all I do,” he said.

GARDEN SNAKES CAN BE DANGEROUS...
Snakes also known as Garter Snakes (Thamnophissirtalis)
can be dangerous Yes, grass snakes, not rattlesnakes. Here's
why.

A couple in Sweetwater, Texas, had a lot of potted plants.
During a recent cold spell, the wife was bringing a lot of them
indoors to protect them from a possible freeze.

It turned out that a little green garden grass snake was hidden
in one of the plants. When it had warmed up, it slithered out
and the wife saw it go under the sofa.

She let out a very loud scream.

The husband (who was taking a shower) ran out into the living
room naked to see what the problem was. She told him there
was a snake under the sofa.

He got down on the floor on his hands and knees to look for it.
About that time the family dog came and cold-nosed him on
the behind. He thought the snake had bitten him, so he
screamed and fell over on the floor.

His wife thought he had had a heart attack, so she covered
him up, told him to lie still and called an ambulance.

The attendants rushed in, would not listen to his protests,
loaded him on the stretcher, and started carrying him out.

About that time, the snake came out from under the sofa and
the Emergency Medical Technician saw it and dropped his
end of the stretcher. That's when the man broke his leg and
why he is still in the hospital.

The wife still had the problem of the snake in the house, so
she called on a neighbor who volunteered to capture the
snake. He armed himself with a rolled-up newspaper and
began poking under the couch.. Soon he decided it was gone
and told the woman, who sat down on the sofa in relief.

But while relaxing, her hand dangled in between the cushions,
where she felt the snake wriggling around. She screamed and
fainted, the snake rushed back under the sofa.

The neighbor man, seeing her lying there passed out, tried to
use CPR to revive her.

The neighbor's wife, who had just returned from shopping at
the grocery store, saw her husband's mouth on the woman's
mouth and slammed her husband in the back of the head with
a bag of canned goods, knocking him out and cutting his
scalp to a point where it needed stitches.

The noise woke the woman from her dead faint and she saw
her neighbor lying on the floor with his wife bending over him,
so she assumed that the snake had bitten him. She went to
the kitchen and got a small bottle of whiskey, and began
pouring it down the man's throat.

By now, the police had arrived.
Breathe here...

They saw the unconscious man, smelled the whiskey, and
assumed that a drunken fight had occurred. They were about
to arrest them all, when the women tried to explain how it all
happened over a little garden snake!

The police called an ambulance, which took away the
neighbor and his sobbing wife.

Now, the little snake again crawled out from under the sofa
and one of the policemen drew his gun and fired at it. He
missed the snake and hit the leg of the end table. The table
fell over, the lamp on it shattered and, as the bulb broke, it
started a fire in the drapes.

The other policeman tried to beat out the flames, and fell
through the window into the yard on top of the family dog who,
startled, jumped out and raced into the street, where an
oncoming car swerved to avoid it and smashed into the
parked police car.

Meanwhile, neighbors saw the burning drapes and called in
the fire department. The firemen had started raising the fire
ladder when they were halfway down the street. The rising
ladder tore out the overhead wires, put out the power, and
disconnected the telephones in a ten-square city block area
(but they did get the house fire out).

Time passed! Both men were discharged from the hospital,
the house was repaired, the dog came home, the police
acquired a new car and all was right with their world.

A while later they were watching TV and the weatherman
announced a cold snap for that night. The wife asked her
husband if he thought they should bring in their plants for the
night.

And that's when he shot her.

Decided to go to my favorite dock today despite the forecast of on and off rain. We, a friend of mine was there, got about a 90 minute break in the rain. He caught seven and I caught five. A combination of drum and white bass. We ran out of minnows.

My last catch was this guy. A largemouth, before the sky opened up and I got soaked. Definitely my best day fishing, even with the rain.

Great catching Greg. My dad always told me the fish always bite better during the rain and after the rain when the gnats are biting.

Well everybody, just wanted to give a short update on Mom.
I've been here for 8 days and Mom is still holdin up nicely.
We took her out to some friends house for dinner last night. Had brisket and BBQ sausages and all the fixins to go with it. It was amazin how much she ate. She even had a good lunch at the home yesterday as well.
I'll be leavin Saturday afternoon to get back to California, and up to Tahoe. I truly hope Mom doesn't go downhill again after I leave because my sister can't get up there to visit nearly as often. My BIL isn't doin that good and she has to take alot more care of him than she use to.
Just wanted to thank you all for all the prayers and well wishes for her. I've told her about them and read the pome to her and it really lifts her spirits. All I can say is that y'all are a really special group of individuals and I really appreciate all the love and concern that y'all exhibit every day towards each other. I'm really blessed to be a part of this site. Thanks so much. Steve.

Headed over to one of the local waters this morning before the WNW winds really kicked up. Caught about 10 of the ever present snot rockets, 3 bass from 11-14” and 3 pretty nice crappies 11-13” swimming 3” Keitech EZ shiner paddle tails. Really wanted to fish weightless plastics but it was not to be Still no goslings but all the mallard hens had the kids in tow. The drakes are no longer competing for breeding rights and are hanging out in bachelor groups. Home in plenty of time to till the garden and maybe get the first mowing in. Nice bright sunny day but that darn wind makes it a challenge.

I've have buzz baits and want to buy a whopper plopper for bass & northern pike.

Can I use a swivel and leader with these or should I tie them on directly? If so what lb. test should I use?

If you could buy one whopper plopper what color? In Youtube videos I often see the one that looks like a perch.

Thanks

Just bought 2 about 3 months ago. 1-black and 1-monkey butt. Haven't tried them yet. Good luck

Thanks Cam. Weatherman have to be the most unskilled people in the world. Good luck at Hartwell. Hoping to see some pictures of your catch. Find some submerged brush or trees, or try under docks for Crappie. Any little jigs with a plastic shad, or a minnow, under a slip bobber should work. I used a 1/16 oz head on my ultralight, and a 1/8 oz on my medium light rod.
Have a good night buddy.

Thanks for the tip

Had a nice little shakedown run at Beseck today. It wasn't quite as warm as yesterday and the
8-10 breeze was gusting to 15+, but I got out anyway. No luck with topwater or a swimbait, so it was Dinger time. I missed the first bite, probably early hookset. Caught a 2lb Largemouth skunkbuster, and then settled in. Caught 2 more cookie cutter males, and decided to shift gears. Pulled out the medium light, and the ultralight rods and went Crappie hunting. The blowdown trees were on fire. Caught 10 up to 1 pound or so. The wind was picking up so I picked up the worm rod one more time, and caught the big fish of the day, a 2lb 12oz chubby female. After that I called it a day.
Definitely a successful shakedown and first trip.

Nice bunch of fish Fred. I went to lake Keowee in upstate SC in mid March. Caught 1 spotted bass about 10 inches. Wind was terrible. Supposed to have been 5-10 mph, but much more. Going to Lake Hartwell toward the end of month camping and hopefully fish some. I'm confident in catching some bass, but would love to catch some crappie to eat while we're there. I think I need more patience to crappie fishing. Have a good evening.

My BIL passed away late last night in his home after a 3 year battle with the most insidious form of cancer (pancreatic.) He’s the one person I’d never guess would contract anything, he llived an extremely healthy lifestyle. My wife Betsy and I were down at their home in
Lancaster since Monday and just recently got home. Some of you may remember my posts of some family outings on the local waters, my sister Sandy and their grandson Ryan would travel up here quite frequently, we’d fish and grab lunch or dinner at a pizza/ Italian restaurant and simply just enjoy each other’s company. He was my BIL but also a great friend, and I am proud and honored to have been called his friend as well. He is most deserving of some sort of tribute.
Think I’ll have to do some fishing tomorrow to sort things out.

Sorry for your loss Brad. I'm sure he'll be up there cheering you on when you're fishing.

Makes me wonder what fond memories today's teenagers will have 50 years from now. Seems like these days they could care less about getting their driver's license the day they turn 16. That was the day I looked forward to for many years.
